August 4th 2026 - There Will Come Soft Rains

On Tuesday 4 August 2026 you can hear a special programme on CHBN created by one of the station's regular presenters, Mike Brown.

The programme is based on a short-story by American science-fiction author Ray Bradbury, which in turn takes its title from a poem by Sara Teasdale.

First published in 1950 the story is about about a house, a very singular, high-tech house in the US city of Allendale, California, and is set in what was, then, the far distant future of 2026. In that fictional future Allendale has been destroyed by a nuclear attack, but by some chance the house and its automated systems have survived and the house continues to serve the family who, sadly, no longer live there.

In the 1970s the BBC Radiophonic Workshop's Malcolm Clark created a version of the story which was broadcast on Radio 4 in 1977. Now, exclusively for CHBN, Mike Brown has created a brand new dramatized version, which relies heavily on sound-effects to tell the story of the house and the fateful events of August 4th, 2026.

The story will be broadcast at 10pm on the exact date, and at the exact time on which the events were set.
